Strategic Sword builds in Where Winds Meet pair the Strategic Sword with the Heavenquaker Spear: the Bellstrike - Umbra martial path. This page compares the builds published for it and shows where they disagree. We have not tested these setups in the game ourselves; each source is named with its date.
Last checked: October 8, 2026. The most recent balance changes to this path came with Version 2.0 on July 23, 2026; Version 2.1 only fixed a bug, and Version 2.2 did not touch it. One player's video from after 2.2 (Enilvhel, September 28) shows this pair's combat stats, damage breakdown and part of the gear, but not the Inner Ways or Mystic Arts, so those come from guide sites.
At a glance
| What the sources show | |
|---|---|
| Weapons | Strategic Sword and Heavenquaker Spear |
| Inner Ways in every build we compared | Sword Horizon, Wolfchaser's Art and Morale Chant |
| Fourth Inner Way | Insightful Strike (Game8, Winds Meet Guide) or Breaking Point (MetaBattle) |
| Weapon and accessory set | Hawkwing, in all three builds and in Enilvhel's gear |
| Tier lists | B in PvE (NPC Waifu), A in PvE and PvP (Game8), T1 in 1v1 PvP (OnKamii) |
How the two weapons work together
The guides describe the same loop:
- Strategic Sword: build Bleeding. Inner Track Slash stacks five Bleeding on the target over its first two stages.
- Heavenquaker Spear: set up. Sober Sorrow buffs you, and a charged Drifting Thrust puts Soul-Shaken on the target, which makes it take more damage over time. Since Version 2.0, the full bonus only applies while the damage comes from one of these two weapons.
- Strategic Sword again: cash in. Inner Balance Strike III cashes in the stacks. With Sword Horizon equipped, its timed follow-up, Crosswind Blade, deals High Bleeding and triggers a Blood Burst.
The payoff shows in Enilvhel's 60-second dummy test after Version 2.2 (September 28, Sword Trial Boss at level 96: 3,901K damage, about 65,029 per second). Blood Burst dealt 62.2% of the damage, Smolder 9.8%, Bleeding 7.6% and Inner Balance Strike III 4.1%.
Where Strategic Sword ranks in Version 2.2
| Tier list | Published | What it rates | Bellstrike - Umbra |
|---|---|---|---|
| NPC Waifu | September 19, 2026 | Damage in real boss fights | B |
| Game8 | September 3, 2026 (Version 2.1) | PvE | A |
| Game8 | September 3, 2026 (Version 2.1) | PvP | A |
| OnKamii | September 19, 2026 (Version 2.2, global server) | High-rank 1v1 Arena | T1 |
NPC Waifu says a new Mystic Skill enlightenment with a burning damage-over-time effect has lifted this path again. He still rates it B because it has to keep several buffs running at once, which falls apart when the boss moves, and he adds that its control makes it good in PvP. (Version 2.0 added a burning branch like that, Dark Scorch, to Dragon's Breath; see Mystic Arts below.) OnKamii calls its damage extremely high but warns about its heavy Endurance cost, and says opponents can run away because the global server still lacks some chase Mystic Skills.
Mixing weapons changes the picture: the Strategic Sword with the Nameless Spear is T0.5 for OnKamii and A for Game8, while pairing either weapon of this path with the Nameless Sword is T2 for OnKamii and A for Game8. Every path side by side: Build Tier List and PvP Tier List.
Inner Ways
You equip four Inner Ways. This is what each build uses:
| Inner Way | Game8 (September 3) | Winds Meet Guide (July 13) | MetaBattle (December 2025) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sword Horizon | Main pick, called the most important, level first | Main pick, level first | Main pick |
| Wolfchaser's Art | Main pick, level first | Main pick | Main pick |
| Morale Chant | Main pick | Main pick | Main pick |
| Insightful Strike | Main pick, much better at higher tiers | Main pick | Not listed |
| Breaking Point | Alternative | Not listed | Main pick |
- The fourth slot is the main disagreement. Game8 and Winds Meet Guide use Insightful Strike; MetaBattle uses Breaking Point. Game8 notes that Insightful Strike only shines once it is upgraded, so if materials are tight, raise Morale Chant first. Game8 switched to Insightful Strike from Invigorated Warrior in its July update.
- Other options from Game8: Invigorated Warrior until your Insightful Strike is upgraded (avoid it in PvP while its extra damage-taken penalty still applies at your tier), Breaking Point, Bitter Seasons and Fivefold Bleed. Winds Meet Guide sees Invigorated Warrior as a pick for clean play, not a safe default.
- Two of these Inner Ways changed on July 23 (Version 2.0). Wolfchaser's Art at Tier 6: Sober Sorrow now puts Soul-Shaken on any target it hits, and Wine Gu needs 3 hits instead of 5 within 3 seconds. Sword Horizon at Tier 3: once Sword's Zenith is full, a guaranteed-Affinity High Bleeding on a non-player target extends your active damage-over-time effects by 10 seconds, up to 16 seconds.
- Fivefold Bleed adds a separate damage-over-time effect, Weeping Blood; the Strategic Sword's own Bleeding still applies alongside it (Where Winds Meet Handbook, September 30).
- Winds Meet Guide was checked on July 13, before the Version 2.0 balance patch, and the MetaBattle page was last edited in December 2025, so treat their details as older than Game8's. Neither video from after 2.2 shows the Inner Way screen.
Stats
Priorities. The sources rank stats differently:
- Game8 (September 3): Precision Rate first, but only until your attacks stop Abrading in the content you play, and no further. Then Affinity Rate, Max Physical Attack, Power, Critical Rate and Max Bellstrike Attack. Most of your Penetration comes from attunements.
- Winds Meet Guide (July 13): Affinity Rate, Power, Max Physical Attack, Physical Penetration and Max Bellstrike Attack, with a warning not to follow older Critical or Precision advice as if it were current.
- MetaBattle (December 2025): Power first, then Affinity Rate, Bellstrike Attack, Max and Min Physical Attack, Critical Rate, Physical Penetration and weapon or skill damage boosts. MetaBattle notes that its gear section is still being worked on.
So each guide site puts a different stat first: Precision (Game8, up to a point), Affinity (Winds Meet Guide) or Power (MetaBattle). All three rank Affinity Rate in their top two.
One build after Version 2.2. Enilvhel's combat attributes in the September 28 video (PvE): Physical Attack 1,318–4,240, Final Critical & Affinity Rate 71.4%, Direct Affinity Rate 2.3%, Critical DMG Bonus 50.0%, Affinity DMG Bonus 40.2%, Physical Penetration 47.9 and Specified Weapon Martial Art Boost 6.2%. The video does not show Precision Rate or Critical Rate on their own. These are one player's numbers, useful for comparison, not a target.
Attunements. Game8's PvE picks: Physical or Formless Penetration on both weapons, the disc and the pendant; Strategic Sword Special Skill DMG Boost or Bleeding DMG Boost on the helmet and chestpiece; Strategic Sword Special Skill DMG Boost or Boss DMG Boost on the greaves and bracers. Game8 says much of the burst comes from the Strategic Sword's special skill and the Crosswind Blade that follows it.
Gear sets
| Source | Weapons and accessories | Armor |
|---|---|---|
| Game8, PvE (September 3) | Hawkwing | Flawless Defense, or Eaglerise if those pieces roll better |
| Winds Meet Guide (July 13) | Hawkwing | Eaglerise |
| MetaBattle (December 2025) | Hawkwing | Eaglerise |
| Enilvhel's gear (September 28 video) | Hawkwing on the sword, disc and pendant; Shadowchase on the ring | Not shown |
- Hawkwing is the one set every source agrees on. Game8 explains that it adds Affinity Rate and stacks Physical Attack when your hits trigger Affinity, which suits this path's Affinity-based burst.
- Armor is open. Game8 recommends Flawless Defense for its damage reduction (the th.gl database calls a set with the same effect Flawless Guardian). For PvE, it adds that armor pieces with strong offensive rolls and Boss or Bleeding damage attunements can beat a full armor set whose rolls are weaker. It calls Eaglerise a strong alternative because Bleeding keeps its damage-reduction stacks up easily.
- Enilvhel's ring shows the Shadowchase set (2 of 2 pieces, Affinity Rate +2.2%), which none of the three guides mention.
Mystic Arts
- Game8 (September 3): for PvE, Flute of the Tides as the opener, Dragon's Breath with its Dark Scorch branch, Drunken Poet, and Dragon Head, which it says you can swap for Soaring Spin or Cloud Steps. It notes that, at Tier 3, Drunken Poet explodes harder on a target with your own Dark Scorch. For PvP: Serene Breeze, Cloud Steps, Meridian Touch and Leaping Toad.
- Winds Meet Guide (July 13): Dragon's Breath with Drunken Poet is useful but optional, since the weapon loop does not depend on them. Cloud Steps or Soaring Spin get you back into melee range when the boss moves.
- MetaBattle (December 2025): its icon list shows Drunken Poet, Lion's Roar, Dragon's Breath, Dragon Head, Leaping Toad, Cloud Steps, Soaring Spin and Ghost Bind. Its text explains Ghost Bind with Leaping Toad and Lion's Roar for groups of enemies, Soaring Spin for its damage, and Dragon's Breath with Drunken Poet.
Dark Scorch and Drunken Poet's stronger explosion on it both came with Version 2.0 on July 23, and Sword Horizon can extend Dark Scorch (see the official changes below). Neither video from after 2.2 shows the Mystic Arts screen.
Official changes since July 2026
The Version 2.0 patch notes (first posted on Steam on July 22, 2026; these changes are in the July 23 section) changed this path in four ways:
- Soul-Shaken (the Heavenquaker Spear's DoT Enhancement talent) lasts 18 seconds instead of 15. Its damage-over-time vulnerability is now split into a base part and an extra part, and the full bonus only applies while the damage comes from someone actively using the Strategic Sword or Heavenquaker Spear.
- Wolfchaser's Art, Tier 6: Sober Sorrow puts a stack of Soul-Shaken on any unit it hits, even one without Soul-Shaken. Wine Gu needs 3 consecutive hits instead of 5 within 3 seconds, and keeping the combo going refreshes it.
- Strategic Sword: Bleeding and High Bleeding now deal base Qi damage, and more of it against a Soul-Shaken target.
- Sword Horizon, Tier 3: once Sword's Zenith is full, a guaranteed-Affinity High Bleeding that hits a non-player target extends your own active damage-over-time effects by 10 seconds, up to 16 seconds. This covers the Strategic Sword's Bleed, Dragon's Breath's Dark Scorch, Bitter Seasons' Qingyi's Poison and Fivefold Bleed's Weeping Blood.
The same section gave Dragon's Breath a new Enlightenment branch, Dark Scorch (Dark Scorch from different players can sit on one target at once), and made Drunken Poet's Tier 3 explosion stronger on targets with your own Dark Scorch.
In the Arena, the same patch:
- made High Bleeding from the Strategic Sword stagger for longer;
- made the Heavenquaker Spear's Drifting Thrust reach its first charge stage sooner, with Tenacity only from that stage instead of from the moment you start charging;
- sped up stages 2 to 4 of every sword's light attacks, made the second spear light attack cancel earlier, and changed the last hit of the fourth spear light attack to knock back instead of up.
Version 2.1 (patch notes, first posted August 20, 2026) made no balance changes to this path. Its August 20 fixes include a Strategic Sword bug: canceling a charged heavy attack could cause a random blink. The Version 2.2 patch notes (September 15, 2026) do not mention this path.
