How the Where Winds Meet damage calculator works
Every hit goes through two checks. The first is Precision: a hit that passes it can be critical, and a hit that fails it can only Abrade. Affinity is separate. Any hit, whether it passed Precision or not, has your Affinity Rate chance to become an Affinity hit. A fan-made calculator site's formula guide and two Chinese game media guides describe the same order.
| Hit | When it happens | Attack it uses | Extra damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affinity hit | Any hit, at your Affinity Rate, whether or not it passes Precision | Max Physical Attack | Affinity DMG Bonus |
| Critical hit | Passes Precision, then rolls a critical | Between Min and Max | Critical DMG Bonus |
| Normal hit | Passes Precision, no critical or Affinity | Between Min and Max | None |
| Abrasion | Fails Precision and is not an Affinity hit | Min Physical Attack | None |
Your average hit is each kind of hit's damage times its chance, added up. Critical and normal hits land anywhere between your Min and Max Physical Attack, so the calculator uses the middle. When Min is higher than Max, every hit uses Min.
Affinity squeezes critical hits
Critical Rate and Affinity Rate share the hits that pass Precision. While the two add up to 100% or less, both work in full. Past 100%, Affinity comes first: with 70% Critical Rate and 40% Affinity Rate, only 60% of the hits that pass Precision can be critical, and the other 10% of your Critical Rate is wasted.
That is why some build guides warn against too much Affinity on critical builds; our Mo Blade build guide quotes one that keeps Affinity near 15%.
Critical and Affinity Rate caps
Critical Rate counts up to 80% and Affinity Rate up to 40%. Direct Critical Rate can add up to 20% more and Direct Affinity Rate up to 10% more; the calculator does not include those two yet. A Chinese game media guide and another calculator site give the same caps, and one guide site's healer stat advice also stops Critical Rate at 80%, as our healer build guide shows.
Reading the stat ranking
The ranking shows what one step of each stat adds to your average hit with the numbers you entered. Steps don't cost the same: compare them with what a piece of gear or an attunement really offers, or enter that piece under "Compare a gear change". Some patterns you will see:
- Precision matters most while it is low, because every missed point leaves some hits as Abrasions at Min attack.
- Affinity hits ignore Precision and use Max attack, so Affinity gains more when your Min and Max are far apart.
- Critical Rate above the cap, or above 100% minus your Affinity Rate, adds nothing.
- For skills that can't Abrade, Precision is worth less: tick the box under your stats. A guide site says this of the Mo Blade's charged attacks, and Version 2.0 did the same for the Panacea Fan's Mystic Skills with the Soulshade Umbrella equipped.
Stat targets for each martial path are in its build guide; the Builds page links them all.
What the calculator leaves out
It compares stats and gear; it does not predict the number you see on screen. Left out for now:
- Skill multipliers and fixed damage, which differ by skill.
- Enemy defense, Physical Penetration and resistance. The sources give different formulas.
- Attribute attack (Bellstrike, Stonesplit, Silkbind, Bamboocut) and its penetration.
- Damage boosts: All Martial Arts, Boss, weapon and skill boosts.
- Direct Critical Rate and Direct Affinity Rate.
- Lower rates against tougher enemies. One source says a resistance stat cuts your Precision, Critical and Affinity rates there.
- How Agility, Power and the other attributes turn into attack and rates. Only one source gives the numbers.
We add a part once two independent sources agree on it.
Where Winds Meet damage calculator FAQ
How is damage calculated in Where Winds Meet?
Each hit is checked for Precision first. A hit that passes can be an Affinity hit, a critical hit or a normal hit; a hit that fails can only be an Affinity hit or an Abrasion. Affinity hits use your Max Physical Attack, critical and normal hits land between Min and Max, and Abrasions use Min. Skill multipliers, enemy defense, penetration and damage bonuses then scale the result.
What is the Critical Rate cap in Where Winds Meet?
Critical Rate counts up to 80%, and Direct Critical Rate can add up to 20% more. Affinity Rate counts up to 40%, plus up to 10% from Direct Affinity Rate. A Chinese game media guide and another calculator site give the same caps.
Is Critical Rate or Affinity Rate better?
It depends on your numbers, which is why the calculator ranks both for your stats. Affinity hits use Max Physical Attack and ignore Precision, so Affinity gains more when your Min and Max are far apart or your Precision is low. Once Critical Rate plus Affinity Rate passes 100%, every extra point of Affinity takes a point away from critical hits.
What is Abrasion in Where Winds Meet?
Abrasion, also called a graze, is the weak hit you get when a hit fails the Precision check and does not turn into an Affinity hit. It uses your Min Physical Attack and cannot be critical. Raising Precision Rate turns Abrasions into normal and critical hits.
Why is my damage different from the calculator?
The calculator gives your average physical hit before skill multipliers, enemy defense, penetration, attribute attack and damage bonuses. Those change with every skill and enemy, so use it to compare stats and gear, not to predict the number on screen.
